What’s not to love about the written word? Under the spell of skilled writers, readers are transported to a planet where residents communicate with thought energy, or they’ll witness a knife fight in a 1920s speakeasy, or meet people so genuine that sitting down to a perfect Thanksgiving dinner seems certain—or not. The best stories do far more than entertain. Memorable novels make readers feel and think long after the covers close, or the e-reader is powered down.
I’ve loved books and writing all my life. In early elementary school, my first best friend, Karen, and I eagerly awaited the bookmobile’s weekly visit to our neighborhood. By the time I reached junior high school, I’d read many of the classics, and most remain my favorite books to this day. In high school, I began writing original short stories and poetry.
For me, becoming a writer was inevitable. Over the years, I’ve added essays and a complete novel to my repertoire. Recently, I’ve started writing another novel. My goal is to have the manuscript edit-ready by the end of 2017.
I’m a member of the Association of Writers & Writing Programs, and the James River Writers, located in Richmond, VA, south of my home. When I’m not writing or working my day job, I enjoy watching classic television programs, listening to music, or reading with my beloved tortie cat, Hannah, nearby.
Favorite Novels: To Kill a Mockingbird, Rebecca, East of Eden, Wuthering Heights, Charlotte’s Web, Black Beauty, Lord of the Flies, The Talented Mr. Ripley, and The Accidental Tourist.
Favorite Writers: The authors who wrote my favorite novels, plus Anne Patchett, Amy Tan, J. R. R. Tolkien, Eudora Welty, Robert Frost and Emily Dickenson.
